The bird has flown

Our blog has suffered today the obsession for security of the company hosting it. Neither Uxía or me have managed to access the blog backstage, as to say, in its former URL, so we had to start from scratch. It was a bit shaky here and I had to give up all the aesthetic part and focus on the basics, text and photos. Uxía knows better about the rest and she does not have issues with balance at the office. So please, bear with us while we get the blog in tip-top shape.

We escaped the low but not the ground swell, so we are moving a bit more than yesterday. But nobody seems to be seasick and we have had a couple of hours of really nice weather to stroll on the decks. While walking about we found out there is a stowaway, a dove I think, which is not much to say given my extremely little knowledge of birds. Hopefully some birder can correct me.

Among the biologists people are taking it easy, the crew is way busier. The engineers deep in the engine room, officers and deckhands on watch are, well, watching our progress, deckhands setting up the sampling tables, the team in the kitchen working at full throttle and feeding us superbly. It will be a miracle if they are not kidnapped before we make it to St. John’s. We will have to be careful -with their meals.

We will delay the time one hour today, and we will do this twice more, to decrease the time difference with St. John’s. We are now at 45ª43’39N – 014ª42’86W and depth is 4562 m, the echosounder shows a flat bottom. The views are very good – here at the surface. We got this year a professional diver but I don’t think he will be game to go so far down.

As I write two other birds have arrived here but I am not taking any risks with them: they are black and white and this is everything I’ll say about them. They do not seem to find a good place to perch themselves, they approach the main deck and go to the stern again.

Before we leave we would like to remind you all that the goal of this blog is to divulge our work, so please send us your questions and comments if there is anything you’d like us to write about.

See you tomorrow...
